This piece surprised me. I had gone out to paint the sunset and wasn’t really drawn to anything so I sat down on the beach to play my guitar; a little while latter it was getting dark and the Moon started to peak out above the horizon but was hidden behind the clouds. It was too good to pass up so I grabbed my paints and got to work.
There is a moody quality to the piece, partially due to the fact it is a nocturne but it is also a reflection of what was going on in my life at the time. I had been out in LA to visit my family and say goodbye to my oldest brother Stuart who had just left his body after a long struggle with cancer. To be honest I was very happy for him. He had been physically challenged his entire life and it must’ve been a relief to be free of his body at the end. To me this painting represents the light of spirit that shines through the darkness of the world but sometimes get hidden from us. There was no conscious intention to use symbolism or honor my brother with this work, it is just what came through in the moment. To me a piece works best when their is no agenda other than honesty.
